Fairness In School Sports

In review of the current boundaries of the following schools there are significant enrollment and capacity imbalances.

Madison                OVER CAPACITY

South Lakes         UNDER CAPACITY BY ALMOST 800 STUDENTS

Why have the SAT scores at South Lakes dropped over the last four years with less students?

How did you let these capacity and imbalance problems take place? Who was watching the store? Who failed to make adjustments in order to insure that all students are treated in a fair way and that they all receive the same services?

As you start your meetings with the public you need to make decisions that adjust boundary lines for the present and the future.

You have serious problems that have to be addressed by serious people who want to make the right decisions for all students in the FCPS system.

I believe you have lots of parents who are very upset with what you have failed to do and what you may do. I hope you make the right decisions for the students.

You better have answers for the parents at the upcoming West County Boundary meetings, because they are going to be very CONTENTIOUS.

Please tell me how after so many meetings regarding the set up of the boundary lines for South County HS, you have significant enrollment and capacity imbalances at Lake Braddock, Lee, Hayfield and SCHS.

The big question is why did you allow this to happen? POLITICAL PRESSURE, MISMANAGEMENT.

problems so that all students are treated in a fair way.

 Why are South Lakes SAT scores at a 4- year low?

 Why have they fallen from 1092 in 2003 to 1048 in 2006?

 Why have four of the six elementary schools that feed South Lakes not able to meet Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) last year?

Why at Lake Anne ES, only 40 percent of 3rd grade disadvantaged students were able to pass the English SOL test?

Why at Hunters Woods, only 62 percent of 3rd grade disadvantaged students were able to pass the English SOL test?

Who has dropped the ball, the Superintendent or the School Board?

Your job is to ensure that all schools meet NCLB Annual Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind. You need to have a zero tolerance standard for failure by schools under NCLB like you have for students who fail to follow your rules.

You take the money from the Federal Government, so you need to do the job.

Based upon the story by Michael Alison Chandler which was in the Washington Post yesterday regarding the problems at the South Lakes HS the following questions need to be asked.

1. Is DISCRIMINATION alive and well in FCPS?

2. Is the FCPS system Discriminating against the MINORITY students at South Lakes HS and other FCPS?

3. Based upon my experience with the FCPS system at meetings it is apparent to me that there are very little MINORITIES  that make up the senior staff at school board sessions and staff that I meet with regarding FISS issues/problem.

4. What is the make up of your various staffs? Please provide the data if you DARE.

Now I understand why you never responded to my questions regarding student safety at FCPS. In the Washington Post story yesterday it indicated that you had serious school security concerns at two schools. One school had 59 serious incidents of crime and the other school had 36 serious incidents of crime. What are the levels of serious crimes at all schools in the FCPS system? Do you not want to tell me because it proves that your schools may not be SAFE?

Mr. Dale do you still stand by your statement that FCPS are safe? I think not.

Thank you for your response, but you have not answered my questions. When my granddaughter moves back and forth from the portable classroom to the main building what security measures do you have that protects her?

After reading the story in the Washington Post yesterday it sounds like we have schools in FCPS that are made up of the haves and have not. Parents do not want their children to attend South Lakes HS because this school is more DIVERSE, ECONOMICALLY AND ETHNICALLY, than other schools in the surrounding area. FCPS has the same problem at other high schools in the County.

Is it because some students who attend SLHS wear the same pants to school every day or is it because SLHS has the largest concentration of students from poverty in the area, with one-third eligible for free and reduced — cost meals? 

Questions for J. Dale and the school board.

Has this school failed NCLB and what are their drop out rates?

Has this school failed or has the FCPS system failed these students?

PS I WONDER WHAT THE RESULTS OF THE DEC. 3 AND 19 MEETING WILL BE.

Once again you have failed to do your job as indicated by the mess you have at South Lakes HS and as many as six other schools in that area. South Lakes has only 1,443 students and has over 700 empty classroom seats. Most of the other six schools are exceeding their design capacities.

In addition, you have spent $63 million on renovation at the South Lakes HS at a cost of $43,000 per student. Since you project the enrollment at most schools will decline in the next few years and over 2,000 people have signed an online petition seeking to halt the whole process and leave all schools the way they are today, one wonders what is going on.

As a tax payer of Fairfax County what are you doing with our money? You have screwed up Hayfield HS and Lee HS the way to handled the opening of the South County HS. South County has to many students and Lee and Hayfield do not have enough.

PS WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT NCLB, HIGH DROP OUT RATES, UNSAFE PORTABLE TRAILERS, MRSA AND OF COURSE POISONOUS WOOD IN USE BY FCPS.

Since you refuse to do any of the following, I believe you are putting students in harms way who attend class in these unsafe portable units.

1. Ensure that ventilation units operate properly.

2. Ensure there are no obstructions blocking air intakes.

3. Check for nest and droppings near outdoor air intakes.

4. Determined that dumpters are located away from doors, windows, and outdoor air intakes.

5. Check potential sources of air contaminants near portable trailer.

6. Ensure that vehicles avoid idling near outdoor air intakes.

7. Minimize pesticide application.

8. Ensure proper drainage away from building.

9. Ensure that there are no signs of MOLD AND MILDEW GROWTH.

10. Check for peeling and flaking paint (if the portable trailer was built before 1980, this could be a LEAD HAZARD.

11. Do indoor air quality test in portable classrooms.

One of your jobs is to keep the students of the FCPS system SAFE. By doing nothing, your policy is to not test so you will not know if there is unsafe conditions.

I care about the safety of the students in the FCPS system. THE QUESTION FOR YOU IS, DO YOU CARE? IF YOU DO YOU WILL TEST.
